Some of
the thinking behind the theme for APEC2000:
-
We
place a high priority on continuity and we will therefore want to
build on the valuable work already underway in APEC which is taking
us to our ultimate goals.

We
want to make sure that APEC is a dynamic process which will enable
our economies to be innovative and forward looking.

We
have heard the clear requests of Leaders and Ministers across many
portfolios to coordinate and integrate the APEC work program much
more, so that it has coherence and relevance for APEC’s various
constituencies.

We
have foreshadowed that we would like to have Human Resource
Development; Information and Communication Technology; and Small and
Medium Enterprises as strands running through the APEC 2000 theme.
We want to address these topics with a real sense of purpose
and in a way that will bring in the business sector and other key
institutions.

We
think that after a decade of hard work, it is important for APEC to
be showing in clear terms that it is a relevant process for the
people of the Asia-Pacific region.
Having
this in mind and after consultations with colleagues, we have formulated
a theme which is brought together under the banner of Delivering
to the Community.
